Blood tests can be used to detect injury to heart muscle. Specific substances are released when heart muscle is damaged during a heart attack and these peak at a certain time after a heart attack, allowing doctors to estimate the time of the attack, or confirm if an attack has occurred. The substances that might be tested for using a blood test include creatinine kinase and troponin.
