Trans-oesophageal echocardiography is a procedure in which a special instrument is passed down the patient’s throat and into their oesophagus (the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach). As the oesophagus is close to the heart, echocardiography images produced using this technique give very clear images of the heart structure.
